Well, here’s freak of nature redefined for you. Meet Amou Haji, a 80-year-old Iranian Man who smokes animal poop (and regular cigarettes as well – five at a time) and hasn’t bathed in 60 years, as he claims that cleanliness brings him sickness.
Haji lives in isolation in Dejgah village, in the Southern Iranian province of Fars, subsists on rotten porcupine meat, and says the thought of a bath after all this time makes him very angry. His home is a hole in the ground, much like a grave, to keep him grounded and in touch with the reality of life. To trim his hair he just burns it off over an open flame. An old war helmet keeps his head warm during the winter.
The villagers say he adopted his extreme, isolated lifestyle after suffering emotional setbacks in his youth. So after all the story of this modern day Diogenis is actually quite a sad one. But who knows? After all those years of seclusion, he may be more at peace with himself and his environment than most of us in our civilized madness are.
